This majestic building is a fusion between a gothic palace and a castle and was once home to the Duke of Feria.
Standing in the city of Zafra, this stronghold was built between 1437 and 1443 by order of Don Lorenzo Suárez de Figueroa, the first Duke of Feria.
Resembling a castle, this palatial home boasts impressive walls and towers. It also has an inner central courtyard and a 24 metre-high keep.
The second Duke of Feria, Lorenzo IV Suárez de Figueroa, remodelled the original palace to make it more comfortable and also ordered the construction of a passageway leading to the convent church of Santa Marina, which is now a cultural centre.
Today, this magnificent building has been turned into a Parador Nacional (state-run hotel), where you travel back in time on a guided tour that encompasses all the most prominent features, such as the terraces and galleries, the marble courtyard and cloister, the main halls and chambers, the chapel and the Sala Dorada (Golden Room). -
