The Arribalavilla castle is located next to the town of Zalamea de la Serena and contains within its walls reminders of the Islamic and Christian eras. And also important facts regarding the history of Spanish literature.
In Zalamea de la Serena (Badajoz), we find the Arribalavilla castle, built during the Islamic period and then rebuilt during Christian times. Within it, the palace of the last master of the Order of Alcántara, Juan de Zúñiga, was built.
The fortress was destroyed and built again several times during the wars between the Moors and Christians that took place during the 7th century.
Nowadays, the castle built by the Christians over the old Arabic fortress, during the 15th century, remains. In this building, we can see three cylindrical towers and a heptagonal one: the keep or the Carlos V tower.
Mid-17th century, the palace of the Zúñiga was built, attached to the fortress walls. Antonio de Nebrija lived in it and it was here where he composed the first Spanish grammar and vocabulary. But he is not the only illustrious visitor to this place, he is joined by Lope de Vega, Calderón de la Barca and Felipe II. -
