Casas de Reina

Casas de Reina lies in the south of the province of Badajoz. The archaeological remains discovered there suggest that the origin of the town dates back to the Stone Age, though the town reached its peak during the Roman occupation, when it went under the name of Regina Turdulorum.

The wealth of the area's natural resources sufficed to attract the interest of different cultures in settling there: mines, farmland, water in abundance and wooded areas for hunting.

The Regina archaeological site, which is very near the present town, is a must for visitors, particularly its Roman theatre, which has been restored and is used as a stage during the summer months. The Regina Theatre Festival is held there.

Another of attraction and source of great pride to the Casas de Reina locals is without doubt the parish church of Santiago, a 15th century Mudejar‑Gothic style building and one of great cultural value to the town.

If its popular fiestas you're into, don't miss the Rayo fiestas, in honour of Christ, those in honour of San Lorenzo or the fiestas of Santiago Apóstol, the patron saint of the town.

As can be expected, Casas de Reina offers visitors a marvellous gastronomic experience. In addition to its famous cured meats, you should make sure to savour its traditional dish: the "jerimote matancero".
