  • This castle, located in the village of San Vicente de Alcántara in the province of Badajoz, has been an exceptional witness to diverse episodes of history.

Several kilometres south of the village of San Vicente de Alcántara in Badajoz province, the castle of Mayorga stands on a rugged hilltop in the Sierra de San Pedro. Although its origins are unclear, everything seems to indicate that it was built by Muslims and construction commenced in the 13th century. After the Reconquest it passed into the ownership of the military Order of Alcántara, and was one of the settings for the rebellion of Don Alonso de Monroy against said order.

The castle, which was declared a Spanish historic heritage site, has a rectangular design and a keep which still has some windows in spite of its state of deterioration.
