Navalmoral de la Mata, in the province of Cáceres, is the geographic setting for the Charca Dehesa Boyal Navalmoral Special Protection Area for Birds. These wetlands provide ideal habitat and breeding grounds for a wide variety of water birds, of international importance according to the criteria of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, due to the inland waters. They are also home to reptiles such as the Spanish pond turtle (Mauremys leprosa) as well as birds, such as the endangered Ferruginous Duck (Aythya nyroca).
