This Baroque church may have been constructed on top of another Visigoth one, which would make the church of Santa María de la Encarnación the oldest religious building in Jerez de los Caballeros.
The church of Santa María de la Encarnación was built on a previous church, possibly Visigoth, and is located next to the Templar fortress that stands in the municipality of Jerez de los Caballeros in the province of Badajoz. Originally it dates back to the mid-15th century, although it was subsequently extended in the 16th century. This makes it the oldest church in this town.
Inside you will be able to see that it is comprised of three naves and has a Latin cross floor plan. In addition, its beautiful Baroque decoration is quite remarkable. On the outside the tower that presides over this church is sure to catch your attention: it is quadrangular, has four sections and a robust appearance.
