The Magacela castle in the province of Badajoz stands on the remains of a Roman fortress, and a town marked by history has grown up around it.
The Magacela Castle is located on a hilltop where the town which gives it its name now stands. It is believed to be of Roman origin and its purpose is purely defensive. Not in vain did the population of this town grow under the shelter of this military construction and they remained inside it until the 16th century.
On your visit you will be able to see the preserved remains of the keep, other towers such as the gatehouse, and some traces of the wall, as well as remains of the old church of Santa Ana, the primitive parish church of Magacela and the cemetery.
The Magacela Castle is related to several historic episodes, but no doubt the most memorable is that of Don Alonso de Monroy, the last Master of Alcántara, who was imprisoned in this fortress for two years. -
