Malpartida de Cáceres

Malpartida is also home to some important archaeological remains. The first settlers of the town date from prehistoric times and were followed by pre-Roman groups, Romans, Moors and late Medieval settlers. Traces of these peoples have left a rich cultural heritage in the town, as exemplified by its traditional architecture, laden as it is with "alpoyatas" (type of carved stone corbels) and big chimneys, which have seen Malpartida included as one of the points on the Chimneys' Trail.

Other buildings, such as the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and the chapel of San Antonio can be added to these.

One of the best known historic buildings in Malpartida is the 18th century wool washery, declared a cultural heritage site. It is currently home to the Vostell-Malpartida Museum which houses works by members of the Fluxus movement. All of which is set in the natural surroundings of Los Barruecos. You can learn much more about this region by looking in at the two interpretation centres there which explain the value of this natural monument in greater detail. It is home to a wide variety of animal and plant life, most notably its emblematic white stork colony.

But this town in Cáceres province is also known for its carnival and Holy Week festivities, as well as that of the Crosses in May and the Stork Week. Celebrations you will enjoy even more should you decide to savour some of the town's traditional dishes, such as the "chanfaina" (lamb stew accompanied by potatoes or rice), cabbage, fried tench and lamb casserole. Don't forget to leave some room for the local sweets such as the "roscas de aire", "roscas fritas" and "roscas del calvario".
