The Marmionda Castle is located in the province of Cáceres. Its remains are a reflection of its defensive past, its name holds the secret to the legend of a beautiful Moorish maiden.
The Marmionda Castle is on a hill outside the town of Portezuelo in Cáceres, so it is also known as the Portezuelo Castle. Its origins date back to the 12th century and it could well be Almohad, although during the Christian Reconquest it changed hands between Moors and Christians several times until finally falling to the Military Orders of the Temple and of Alcántara.
This fortress had great strategic importance, which will be clear to you when you visit the remains. The outline of the quadrangular base is still visible, as is that of the walls crowned by battlements finished off with pyramids. You can also see the barbican in front of the wall, a solid cylindrical defence tower raised on one of the corners of the enclosure and a large water cistern in the interior parade ground.
There is free access to the castle which owes its name, Marmionda, to a beautiful Moorish maiden, the daughter of the master of the fort and around whom arose one of the legends in the history of this defensive enclosure. -
