Moheda Alta Periurban Conservation and Recreation Park

Located in the municipality of Navalvillar de Pela, in the province of Badajoz, the Dehesa de Moheda Alta estate was made a Periurban Conservation and Recreation Park in 2001, becoming part of the Network of Protected Natural Spaces of Extremadura.

Dehesa de Moheda Alta has a surface area of 150 ha., and contains a wide variety of scenery, most outstandingly meadows dominated by holm-oaks, farmland where rainfed cereals are grown, pasture land, olive groves, riparian forests, reservoirs, rivers and streams. This favours the presence of numerous species of wild flora and fauna, like the common crane. Other frequent visitors to these meadows are birds of prey such as the black-shouldered kite, the Montagu's harrier and the golden eagle, and wading birds like the European white stork (Ciconia ciconia), the black stork (Ciconia nigra) and the grey heron (Ardea cinerea).

Around the Ruecas and Cubilar rivers, the characteristic riparian woodland can be seen, formed by ash trees, willows and black poplars, offering a unique landscape. But one should not forget that the predominant habitat in Moheda Alta is the "dehesa", or meadow pasture, comprised mainly by holm-oaks, along with scrub and bushes such as the rockrose, the gum cistus, the Spanish lavender, the flax-leaved daphne, the dog rose and the common hawthorn
