The town of Santa Amalia lies in the heart of the fertile plain of the Guadiana river, in the province of Badajoz.
It was founded in 1827 by Ferdinand VII at the request of a group of peasants asking the king for land to farm. He named the place after his third wife, Maria Josefa Amalia of Saxony.
Dating from 1831, the parish church was built by the master builder Fabián González, which has been declared a cultural heritage site in the monument category. It stands in the town's main square, is Classical in style and is dedicated to San Antonio.
While conserving its roots as farming territory, Santa Amalia has also managed to consolidate itself by developing its services and tourism sector, constituting as it does a strategic point for the region's most important communication routes.
When visiting, don't miss out on trying the town's traditional dish, the "ajilimoje", which is a meat based dish - liver, pork and pig's ear - accompanied by olives and chilli peppers. -
