Winter is the best time of year for visiting the ZEPA Arrocampo Reservoir, where the wetlands provide shelter for numerous birds.
In the province of Cáceres, you will be able to enter the ZEPA Arrocampo Reservoir, which is spread over the municipal areas of Almaraz, Romangordo, Saucedilla and Serrejón. This natural space is formed by continental waters, wetlands and aquatic plants, along with holm oak forests. Unbeatable surroundings that have favoured a proliferation of settlements of different birds, such as the purple heron, the Western marsh harrier, the purple swamp hen, the great cormorant and the black-crowned night heron, which have found an ideal place for nesting in this ZEPA sanctuary.
You can get to this reservoir along the farm lanes and irrigation canals that surround it, and spot some of the most characteristic species from the area, such as the white stork, the black and the red kite, the kingfisher, the little bittern, the short-toed eagle, the common stilt, the little egret, the common crane and the European golden plover.
The best time for visiting this ZEPA sanctuary is winter, as numerous species remain there during the season.
