This Special Protection Area in the province of Badajoz lies between Castuera and Esparragosa de la Serena, on the Zújar reservoir, and is inhabited by Mediterranean turtles, otters and important concentrations of Eurasian wigeons and mallards. Another notable presence is that of the black tern, an endangered bird.
Of the fish that populate the waters of the Zújar reservoir, we should mention pardillas (Iberochondrostoma lemmingii), calandinos (Squalius alburnoides), Iberian barbels, spined loaches and bogas (Leporinus obtusidens).
