    Nestled on the border between Cáceres and Badajoz lies the Nacimiento Del Río Gévora Special Protection Area for Birds, encompassing the districts of Valencia de Alcántara and Alburquerque. It boasts various mountain ranges, such as Sierra del Castaño, Sierra de la Caraba, Sierra de la Calera and Sierra de Paja, as well as various waterways such as Ribera de Jola, Ribera de Alcorneo, Ribera del Fraile, the Gévora river and the Gevorete stream.

    This natural setting is home to various species of mammals, such a wolves and otters, as well as such reptiles as Spanish pond turtles and water lizards. It also shelters many kinds of fish, such as linnets, Chondrostoma lemmingii, Squalius alburnoides, Iberian barbel, Iberian nase and the endangered Anaecypris hispanica (jarabugo). You can also find birds of prey such as Bonelli's eagles and Egyptian vultures, as well as the endangered black stork.
