Almoharín

Just 50 km from Cáceres, we find this town, bordering the Río Búrdalo river, a direct tributary of the Guadiana, and surrounded by fantastic natural scenery. With financial activity centring on agriculture and 2,000 inhabitants, this is the town with the third highest population in the region.

A town famed for its fig-tree farming. Almoharín was recognised on a world scale for its production of figs but, as farming this fruit is truly laborious work, it gradually fell into decline. Nonetheless, over the past decades, the inhabitants of this town have decided to awaken the passions of years gone by and farm figs again, although only on small family plots. The famous fig sweets are from their harvest — a gastronomic delicacy that Extremadura exports to the whole world.

Walk over its Roman bridges and along its streets and discover a town full of history and tradition.

On a trip through its streets, you will find the El Salvador parish, declared a Monument of Historic and Artistic Interest in 1978. The building is characterised by its composition, made up of three naves and different artistic styles are blended in it, both in its masonry and granite stone. Likewise, you will also come across the Torre de la Villa, made up of three bodies and a dome. It was built in different phases from the 15th to the 18th century and was, at first, a defence tower and, finally, used as a bell tower.

The true devotion of the residents of this town in Extremadura is found 7 km from the town centre in the shrine of Nuestra Señora de Sopetrán, the patron of Almoharín and is if for her that this building was built especially at the end of the 11th century; it also has a splendid Baroque altarpiece from the 18th century. It is at this shrine that the town residents hold their pilgrimages, such as on Easter Monday.
